Track Bias: The 1600m start is in a long chute onto the back straight and gives all runners a chance to take up a position in the long run to the first and only corner. When the field hits the straight they have a 400m sprint to the winning post and fast sectionals usually help those horses running on pace and up to the pressure to pass the leaders.
History: First run in 1991 it was over 1400m and known as Hong Kong International Bowl, upgraded to 1600m in 1999 and then given Group 1 status in 2000. Jim And Tonic won in 1998 (at 1400m) and went on to win the Hong Kong Cup in 1999, Sunline won in 2000 coming of her 2nd Cox Plate win and 4 other Group 1’s in distances from 1200m to 2040m.
